Camelback Mountain Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation would like to help you
get on track for a fun and safe snowboarding season. We know that snowboarding
has been one of the fastest growing winter sports over the last decade. Dedicated
boarders are even finding ways to do it in the spring! Although it is fun and good
exercise, you need to be in good shape and fully prepared before you hit the slopes.
Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced snowboarder, you need to be in the know.
Know that proper rest is required before you jump on your board. A good warm up is strongly recommended before any activity. A warm up can consist of stretching (both static and dynamic), a little cardio (bike, EFX, even running in place) to get the blood flowing, and of course a mental warm up (know your course). A static stretch is
performed at a slow constant speed with the end position held for 30 seconds.
A dynamic stretch utilizes speed of movement, avoiding bouncing but including
sport specific movements. Remember, the wrist (27%) and the knees (16%) are the
two most common injuries among snowboarders, so stay loose!
Finally, don’t forget your gear. The right protective gear could be the difference
between a serious injury and walking away from the crash. Properly fitting gloves, boots, hats, goggles, and pads are paramount in staying safe.
Remembering these few steps will keep you warm, safe, injury free, and on the
slopes a little longer. Be safe boarders, and have fun!
